Tribute to Ernest Borr
1934-2017
This Season is dedicated to Ernie, with love and appreciation.
Having conducted the West River Winds Community Band for several years, it is only fitting that this summer’s concert series is dedicated to the memory of Ernie Borr.

Ernie earned a bachelor of arts degree in music education from Jamestown College in 1956 and a master’s degree in music from Colorado State University in 1962. Ernie’s contribution to music education in this area has been legendary. He began his 20-year career in music education in the Mandan Public School system. He developed numerous and notable achievements with the Mandan High School marching band, concert band, and jazz ensemble. Following his career in Mandan, Ernie initiated a band program for the University of Mary.

Music was his lifelong love and the West River Winds Community Band benefitted from his love of band music. Ernie was always trying to improve the band; one of the many things he did was to help create/accumulate a large library of music. Always a strong promoter, Ernie acquired many sponsors from the Bismarck/Mandan area for the financial wellbeing of the band.

As director of the West River Winds, Ernie continually shared very interesting background information for the selections the band performed during the concert season. Ernie was a veteran of the U.S. Army and above all, very patriotic. His music selection for each concert reflected that strong patriotism. This year, we dedicate our entire season to the memory of Mr. Ernie Borr, a true patriot of North Dakota and a tireless advocate for music and music education
